How to Choose Your Foundation Colour

Step 1 Determine your skin undertone

Almost all Asians have Golden Yellow, Olive (yellow with a greenish tinge) or Neutral (natural, yellowish brown) undertones.  Compare yourself against others (as fair/tan as you) in front of a mirror and it will be easier to find out your undertone.

Step 2 Pick a colour in your undertone group

  • As a guide, an average
    • Singaporean/Malaysian Chinese has "Light to Medium" complexion
    • Malay has between "Medium" and "Medium to Tan" complexion
    • Indian has "Tan" complexion
    • Filipino/Vietnamese/Thai/Indonesian has "Medium" complexion
    • PRC/Hong Kong Chinese has "Light" complexion
  • If you are slightly fairer or more tan than average, just go a shade lighter or darker.
  • Fair shades (Golden Fair, Ivory, Sandy Fair & Fair) can only be your colour if you are always the fairest in a crowd.
  • For current users of M.A.C Cosmetics, the match according to customers who have tried both brands:
    • NC/NW15-20 Fair
    • NC/NW20-25 Light
    • NC/NW25-30 Light to Medium
    • NC/NW30-35 Medium
    • NC/NW35-40 Medium to Tan
  • Within each shade, there may be more than a choice,
    • Sandy Fair is slightly more pinkish than Ivory.
    • Linen is half a shade lighter than Fairly Light Neutral
    • Light Medium is more pinkish than Light Neutral.
    • Neutral has a stronger olive tone than Golden Medium.
    • Sunkissed Fair is more pinkish than Fairly Light.
    • Medium Beige Neutral is more pinkish than Beige Neutral.
